Staff — John Harte

John Harte

John Harte has been a staff photographer at The Bakersfield Californian since September, 1981. A native of New York City, he moved to Taft as a teenager and attended Taft High and Taft College before earning his bachelor's degree in journalism from Cal State University, Northridge.

As the only photographer on the staff to work the afternoon shift permanently, John's primary photography load for The Californian is sports. In addition to his work at the newspaper, John is the photojournalism instructor at Bakersfield College where his beginning photojournalism course emphasizes digital photography and Photoshop techniques. He also owns a freelance sports photography business that he founded in 1999.

When he's not shooting or teaching, John spends his free time on the Central Coast, where he rents a home in Grover Beach.
