Alex Horvath has been telling stories with pictures since he was 12 years old. After learning the ropes as a high school photographer, he majored in journalism at Ohio's Bowling Green State University, where he also was photo editor of the BG News, the student-produced daily newspaper. After graduating in 1987, he interned at the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch, then went to work as a photographer at the Rome Daily Sentinel in Rome, N.Y.

In 1992 he joined the Mansfield (Ohio) News Journal as picture editor, where he worked for four years. In 1996 he became a picture editor at the Buffalo News.
