In this time exposure, a California Highway Patrol vehicle (the curving lights in center) weaves across lanes on Highway 99 in Bakersfield on Nov. 23. The maneuver is used to control traffic as it heads south to Los Angeles.

At the start of the busy Thanksgiving weekend, I wanted to illustrate the heavy traffic on Highway 99. I used a technique that is usually one of the first things you try as a beginning photographer — time exposure. I knew what kind of shot to expect, but what I didn't expect was a California Highway Patrol vehicle weaving back and forth (curved lights in the center) across lanes to control the heavy flow of traffic that night. For the shot I held the shutter open for about 25 seconds.
